Frequently asked questions
The questions we hear most, answered the way we would answer them in the first conversation. If yours is not here, a short call will get you a straight answer.
Getting started
What happens in the first conversation?
Twenty minutes, no paperwork. We ask what is going on and tell you honestly whether we are a fit. Sometimes the answer is no, and we will say so.
Do you have a minimum?
Our planning relationships tend to start around one million in investable assets, because that is about where complexity becomes the real risk. If you are not there yet, read what we publish, use it freely, and talk to one of our younger advisors if you would like a head start.
Is Brandon taking on new clients?
A few at a time, and mostly by referral. The firm's first job in 2026 is the families already here, so Brandon takes on a new relationship when the fit is clear and there is room to do the work properly.
Do I need to be near Chesterfield?
No. Most meetings are by video. We meet in person by appointment across Virginia.
What if more than one situation sounds like me?
Most people are in two at once: a business owner whose parents are getting older, an executive with young kids. It is still one plan. The situations are only where we look first.
How we work with you
Who will I actually work with?
Brandon leads every plan, with the Waypoint team alongside him, and every client knows who to call.
What do I walk away with?
One written plan that covers investments, taxes, insurance and the estate, with every recommendation explained before anything is signed. After that, reviews on a fixed schedule and the deadlines tracked for you.
How often do we meet?
On a fixed schedule we agree to at the start, and whenever a deadline we track for you comes up. You also hear from us when something changes that touches your plan.
What happens if Brandon is not available when something comes up?
Brandon Vaughan works alongside him on every plan, and the plan itself is written down where the team, your CPA and your attorney can read it. Anything time-sensitive, a death claim, a distribution deadline, an emergency, is handled the same day, whoever picks up. That line does not move.
Fees and how we are paid
How are you paid?
A mix of asset-based fees, flat planning fees, and, for insurance, commissions from the carrier. We will show you exactly how before you sign anything. We are fee-based rather than fee-only, on purpose: it lets us help people a fee-only model would turn away.
Will I know what I am paying before I commit?
Yes. Before anything is signed, we show you every fee in writing, what it is for, and how it is charged. Nothing starts until you have seen it.
Working with your CPA and attorney
Do I have to change my CPA or attorney?
No. If they are good, we work with them. We coordinate, we don't replace. When you need one, we have people we have worked with for years.
Do you prepare tax returns?
No. We plan with your CPA and send them what they need directly. If you need one, we have people we have worked with for years.
The firm and your accounts
Is Waypoint a new firm?
The name is newer than the practice. Brandon has planned for families in Central Virginia since 2015, and most of our clients have been with him for years. Same people, same phone number, and a firm built to be here for the long haul.
Where are my accounts held?
At Fidelity or Charles Schwab, in accounts in your name. We can see them and act in them on your instructions. We never hold your money ourselves.
Who is Waypoint affiliated with?
Securities and investment advisory services are offered through Simplicity Investments, a securities dealer and member FINRA and SIPC, and TLG Advisors, Inc., a registered investment advisor. Waypoint Wealth Services is not affiliated with Simplicity Investments.
